The Guelph Jr B Regals Lacrosse Club announced the Coaching Staff for the 2018 season on Thursday afternoon:

Head Coach: Ken Hastie

Assistant Coach: Lewis White

Assistant Coach: Jay Martin

Goalie Coach: Blair Hastie

Leading the charge behind the bench is Ken Hastie. Hastie returned to the Jr B Regals for his second stint with the club midway through the 2017 season. Hastie was last with the Regals in the 2011 season when he served as the team’s General Manager and Assistant Coach.

New to the Jr B Coaching Staff for 2018 is Assistant Jay Martin, as well as Blair Hastie, who will be overseeing the development of the team’s goaltenders.

Martin joins the Regals with a wealth of coaching experience at the Junior and Minor levels. Most recently, Martin was head coach of the 2017 Guelph Midget team, guiding them to a 4th place finish in the “A” division. Before that, he coached Jr B in Elora and Guelph.

Blair Hastie, a goalie himself, is the brother of Ken and will be the first full-time Goalie Coach the team has had since 2011.

The entire Coaching Staff and Management Team is looking forward to what is shaping up to be a promising 2018 season.

The team will be holding various events during the off-season in preparation for the upcoming season.

Speed, Aggression a focus for Regals

By Rob Massey, Guelph Sports Journal

KITCHENER – The Guelph Regals figure on being a young squad in this Ontario junior B lacrosse league season and they hope to use that youth to increase their speed and aggression.

“We’re going to have a young team and be fast and aggressive and exciting,” coach Keith Begley said following Saturday’s training camp session at Queensmount Arena. “They’re all very energetic and they want to be here. That’s one of the biggest hurdles for a coach, having kids that want to play. If you’ve got that, you can work with them. If not, it’s a lot different.”

Regals To Play 8 Games At Sleeman Centre, 2 At West End

As the construction of Victoria Road Arena continues to take place, the Guelph Jr B Regals found themselves looking for a home for the second consecutive summer.

After playing in Cambridge at Galt Arena Gardens for the 2016 season with the mindset that Victoria Road Arena would be open for the 2017 lacrosse season, the Regals are glad to be back in their hometown.

“We are ecstatic to be back playing in Guelph,” said Regals General Manager Matt Pelkey.

“Our experience in Cambridge was great last year and they treated us very well, but it was tough to be outside of Guelph. Our Board worked extremely hard to get this team back in town after we found out that the renovations at Victoria Road were going to take longer than initially expected,” Pelkey said.

Renovations to the Regals’ home arena at Victoria Road were originally planned to be complete in May of this year. However, changes happened over the winter and the first floor booking at the arena was pushed back to July 2, well after the Junior B lacrosse regular season will have concluded.

That left the Jr B Regals once again searching for a place to play.

“There were times we thought we may have to leave Guelph again for the summer, but our Board was awesome and the City of Guelph helped us out a lot with finding floor time here. We’re absolutely thrilled to be back home.”

With floor hockey, roller derby and minor lacrosse all competing for floor time, it was tough to find needed floor time for the Jr B Regals. Then, the team finally reached a deal with the Sleeman Centre that will allow for the team to play its regular season and playoff home games at in addition to practices.

Due to previously-scheduled events, the Jr B Regals will not play their first game at the Sleeman Centre until May 12, their third home contest of the season, when they host the Elora Mohawks. The first two regular season games – against Owen Sound on April 30 and Orangeville on May 7 – will be played at West End Recreation Centre.

Below is the 2017 Regular Season Home Schedule:

Sun. April 30 – vs Owen Sound – 3:00 PM – West End

Sun. May 7 – vs Orangeville – 7:00 PM – West End

Fri. May 12 – vs Elora – 8:00 PM – Sleeman Centre

Fri. May 19 – vs Orangeville – 8:00 PM – Sleeman Centre

Fri. May 26 – vs St. Catharines – 8:00 PM – Sleeman Centre

Sun. May 28 – vs Welland – 7:00 PM –  Sleeman Centre

Wed. June 7 – vs Pt. Edward – 8:00 PM – Sleeman Centre

Sun. June 11 – vs Six Nations – 7:00 PM – Sleeman Centre

Fri. June 16 – vs Elora – 8:00 PM – Sleeman Centre

Sun. June 18 – vs Wallaceburg – 4:00 PM – Sleeman Centre

The Jr B Regals kick off the 2017 season on Saturday, April 15 when they visit the Elora Mohawks. Game time is slated for 7:00 PM.

Guelph Jr B Regals Logo

With a new season comes a new look for the Guelph Jr. B Regals.

The team revealed their new logo and announced their 2017 regular season schedule along with the team’s Training Camp dates today.

The team’s new logo, pictured above, maintains the club’s main colours of blue, red and white, although the shades were tweaked slightly. The logo had previously remained the same for most of the organization’s 25 years of existence, with the 2008 season using a secondary logo to celebrate hosting the Founders Cup.

The new logo brings a modernized and simple look to the Jr. B Guelph lacrosse team.

The Regals will kick off the 2017 regular season on Saturday, April 15 against the rival Elora Mohawks in Elora at 7:00 p.m. The team will play its home opener on Sunday, April 30 versus divisional foe Owen Sound when the NorthStars come to Guelph for a 3:00 p.m. game start.

The Regals will kick off its 26th Training Camp on Saturday, March 18 at 8:00 p.m. at Queensmount Arena in Kitchener. The camp concludes Sunday, April 9 with an exhibition game versus the Wallaceburg Red Devils at 3:00 p.m. at Queensmount Arena.

2017 Camp Criteria

The Regals begin their quest for a third consecutive playoff berth after finishing the 2016 regular season with a record of 11-9 before bowing out to the Niagara-on-the-Lake Thunderhawks in the 1st round of a best-of-5 playoffs 3 games to 1.

Regals NOTL 2016 Playoff PreviewWhen the final horn sounded on the Guelph Jr. B Regals’ regular season on Sunday evening – an 8-7 victory over Owen Sound – they clinched the sixth seed in the Ontario Junior “B” Lacrosse League’s Western Conference, setting themselves up for a first round battle with the Niagara-on-the-Lake Thunderhawks.

In their only meeting of the season, the Thunderhawks edged Guelph 6-5 in what was a thrilling game from start to finish at Galt Arena Gardens in Cambridge. In that game back on May 14, the Regals’ Jay Milne broke a 4-4 tie to give the home team a one-goal lead with just 5:21 left to play in the game. Niagara’s Brandon Sveda knotted the game at five shortly after and Zach Luis scored the eventual game winner with a mere 1:23 remaining in regulation.

Although the two teams only squared up for one game in the 2016 season, Junior “B” lacrosse fans are in for a treat should the series be anything like their lone mid-May meeting.

Both teams have made significant moves in order to boost their lineups since then. In the weeks leading up to the OJBLL Trade Deadline, the Thunderhawks added fifth-year left-offensive player Everett Milberry from Welland, the team that he had spent his entire Junior lacrosse career with up until his trade to Niagara. The Regals made some moves of their own before the June 18 deadline, having acquired O Bryce Mayea (from Hamilton), D Cody Brown (from Newmarket) and on Monday picked up O/T Ryan Carruthers from London.

Both Guelph and Niagara have the offensive firepower to blow the series open, however, that seems unlikely given the steady defence and solid goaltending each squad brings to the table.

The series will kick off when Game 1 begins Friday night in Niagara at Meridian Credit Union Arena in Niagara-on-the-Lake at 8:00 p.m. Here is the entire schedule for the first round:

Game #1: Fri. June 24 @ Niagara – 8:00 p.m. (Meridian Credit Union Arena)

Game #2: Sun. June 26 @ Guelph – 7:30 p.m. (Galt Arena Gardens)

Game #3: Wed. June 29 @ Niagara – 8:00 p.m. (Meridian Credit Union Arena)

*Game #4: Sat. July 2 @ Guelph – 7:00 p.m. (Galt Arena Gardens)

*Game #5: Sun. July 3 @ Niagara – 7:00 p.m. (Meridian Credit Union Arena)

*if necessary
